Lesson 1 of 8
A type scale
- 11 min
- 5 checks
- 3 hints
- Go to task
Goal
Headings that step down clearly
Explanation
Headings aren't just bigger text. They're a map of the page: readers sweep their eyes over it and know what matters most before reading a single word.
You build a type scale from a fixed ratio, not from random numbers. Pick the size of your body text, then multiply it by a ratio like 1.25 or 1.333 for each step up. The sizes you get feel balanced to readers, even if they couldn't tell you why.
Three steps are enough for most pages. Adding more weakens the difference between headings instead of strengthening it.
Your task
Make h1 bigger than h2 and h2 bigger than h3, and make h1 at least 1.6 times the size of h3.
Checks
5 checks- h1 is bigger than h2
- h2 is bigger than h3
- h3 is bigger than the paragraph
- h1 is at least 1.6 times the size of h3
- Sizes use relative units (rem or em)
